The idea of "Demetra's Flavours of Sicily" began in August of 1983 when Ugo Petrillo arrived at Comiso NATO BASE - Ragusa, Sicily as an Intelligence Liaison Officer. Being an extremely conscientious person regarding nutrition and a firm believer of "Longevity through Eating". During his free time from Intelligence work, Ugo traveled throughout Sicily and its twelve surrounding islands searching for the best natural ingredients from which the most sumptuous culinary could be produced. All of the products represented and produced by the "Demetra" line have an affinity with specific regions of Sicily to accentuate the most exquisite ingredients and resulting flavours!
Within a span of seven years (from 1983-1990), Ugo searched out and experienced numerous culinary traditions from all nine sicilian provinces: Messina, Catania, Siracusa, Ragusa, Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Enna, Palermo and Trapani. This effort resulted a keen awareness achieved by Ugo that further enriched him on "the taste of knowledge" culminating with a true, undeniable understanding that Sicilian products are a triumph of colors, fragrance and scents that once experienced will never be forgotten! While enjoying local dishes at family-run farmhouses through Sicily, Ugo confirmed that Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Hebrews and Spaniards left a strong regional impact for production of natural ingredients products which are valued and culminate with a gastronomic culture within a splendid form of culinary art!
